Music blasted from the radio as Claire’s feet hung out of
the window. The cool breeze tickled her toes as they drove up to the top of the
hill. The sun would be setting soon, and they couldn’t miss it.
“Are you excited?” He asked her. She smiled at him, watching him focus on the road ahead. In that moment she couldn’t believe how in love she was with him. He was everything to her.
“Of course I am!” She replied.
This was their last night in town before they moved to the other side of the state. It was the place where they shared their first kiss. They came here almost every month to have a sundown picnic.
They usually packed peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and lemonade and all their other favorite snacks. But tonight they packed just a bottle of wine and two glasses.
They parked the car and trudged up to the spot at the very top of the hill. Claire almost regretted wearing her flip flops, but the warm weather made her remember why. They held hands as they hiked to the top. “You okay hun?” Aaron asked. Claire slipped some as she tried to keep up with him. “Stupid shoes!!” She replied. “I should have just worn my sneakers I guess..” Aaron laughed some before picking her up.
“Whoa babe what are you doing?” She asked startled. “Practicing.” He smiled and carried her the rest of the way to the top.
When they finally reached the top the sun was just beginning to set. Aaron gently put her down and they slowly glided into a warm embrace. “I love you.” She said hugging him tightly.
“I love you too.” He said. “BABE! We forgot the basket!” She pulled away from him laughing. She turned to look down and she could see their small picnic basket locked away in the car.
“Should we-“ When she turned back around Aaron was down on one knee. Her jaw dropped and tears started forming her eyes. In his hands was a tiny little black box. “Claire Mathews, Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?” He asked. Claire nodded her head while she began to cry.
“Yes!! Of Course yes!!!” She stuttered through her tears. He slipped the ring on her finger and once again they were hugging.
“You just have to promise me one thing.” She said. He looked down at her. “And what would that be?”
“You have to promise me we’ll come back here for our anniversary okay?” She asked.
“Deal.” He said before kissing her.
