She stood at the bottom, looking up at the tower of gold. The
sword in her hand was covered in dark blood. The decapitated head of the former
king was gripped tightly in her fingers. She had what she wanted and yet it
still didn’t seem like enough. She threw the head to the side and walked closer
to the gold. It gleamed underneath the sunlight seeping in through the windows.
Picking up a piece of it, she rolled it across her knuckles feeling its weight.
“Pathetic!” She said tossing the piece of gold back into the pile. “This is what you call a treasure?” She asked the headless corpse of the king. She had the whole kingdom to herself now. She had slayed a thousand men and yet she was still unhappy with her reward. A soldier on the brink of death came crawling up behind her, blood dripping from his mouth. She turned around at the sound of him coughing, ready to strike again.
“When will you be satisfied Victoria? How many men must you kill before your needs are satisfied?” The soldier asked, coughing up more blood. Victoria turned around to face him, an evil grin spread across her face. She put her boot on his throat beginning to choke him. “As many as it takes!” She said, and with that she crushed his neck beneath her boot, killing him instantly.
From outside the windows of the tower she could hear angry voices below. The people of the kingdom wanted vengeance for what she had done. They began to chant in the court below. Victoria walked over to the window, her sword still gripped in her right hand. She looked down upon the people below her.
She raised her sword high up above her and lightening touched down onto it. The electricity began to flow through her, giving her even more power and yet it still didn’t feel like enough. She wanted more power, more money. She wanted the whole world to be hers.
Suddenly a blade from behind pierced through her skin, impaling her. Victoria looked down at the blade sticking out from her belly in complete shock. The blade slid from her stomach and out her back, leaving a trail of blood behind. She turned around to face her assailant and when she did her jaw dropped to the floor, and tears sprang to her eyes.
“Elise. You’re alive.” She said her lips quivering. Her daughter stared at her with only one emotion: Disappointment.
“Yes, Mother, I’m alive. And you, you are not. You are just a vessel of the mother I once had. She was caring, and loving and kind. You are nothing but a monster with her face.” Elise said.
Her mother swayed back and forth as death came closer and closer.
“I love you Elise, and I’m sorry.” Were her mother’s last words. But deep down inside Elise knew it wasn’t true. She could see the lie in her mother’s eyes as she spoke. Victoria dropped to ground, finally succumbing to her wounds. Elise bent down and grabbed the necklace around her mother’s neck. It was the necklace that gave her power, A dark green emerald.
